A False Step Doesn't Define You: On the Courage to Make Mistakes

Many of us spend our lives trying to avoid one thing at all costs: making a mistake. We fear stumbles because, in our culture, a mistake is often equated with failure, and failure with a lack of worth. However, life rarely resembles a straight line. It is rather a series of steps—some leading us exactly where we wanted to go, and others appearing to be "false."

I recently came across a quote that deeply resonated with me:

"You will make false steps in your life, but it doesn't mean you will be defined by them."

The Question That Changes Everything

Often, when we make a mistake, a question loops in our minds: "Why did this happen to me?". This is a question from a victim's position that keeps us stuck in the past. Try replacing it with something much more powerful:

  1. "What is this mistake preparing me for?"
  2. "What is this mistake showing me? What else needs to be addressed?"

Biology does not waste energy on events that have no purpose. This "false step" is likely protecting you from a worse scenario or building a competency you need to reach the next level.

A Recall Healing Perspective

In working with emotions and Recall Healing, we often look at our actions not in terms of "right or wrong," but in terms of "experience." Every step, even the one we judge as a mistake, carries information. Your body and subconscious do not morally judge your choices—they react to the emotions that accompany those choices.

If you define yourself by your mistake, you fall into the trap of guilt or diminished self-worth. From a Recall Healing perspective, such chronic emotional states can program specific reactions in the body. For example:

You Are the Observer, Not the Outcome

Imagine you are learning to walk. A fall doesn't mean you're not meant to walk. It only means that this time gravity was stronger or your balance was off. Feedback: "try differently."

Why do we deny ourselves this right in adult life?
A false step is just a moment in time. It is an event, not your identity. Choosing a path that turned out to be more difficult doesn't make you a "bad driver." It makes you a driver with richer experience.

How to Stop Defining Yourself by Your Stumbles?

  1. Separate action from essence: You did something you consider a mistake, but YOU are not the mistake.
  2. Accept the "data": Instead of fighting the past, ask: "What did this situation teach me about my needs?"
  3. Forgive yourself: Forgiveness is not about ignoring facts; it's a decision to take off the weight that prevents you from moving forward.

Remember, courage is not about never falling. Real courage is taking the next step with the knowledge that even if it is "false," your inner value remains intact.

Your 3 Minutes with a Mistake – Exercise

If you feel that an event from the past is still "nagging" you, take a moment for this simple exercise:
1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
2. Locate the weight: Feel in your body where you sense the weight of this mistake most. Is it a tightening in your stomach, tension in your shoulders, or pain in your lower back?
3. Breathe: Take a deep breath and say in your mind: "This is just an event. It is not who I am."
4. Release: Exhale slowly and imagine this weight leaving your body as dark smoke, making room for a new lightness.
