From a physiological perspective, the small intestine is where our body performs its most important work: it digests, absorbs nutrients, and separates what is nourishing from what needs to be eliminated. However, from the perspective of psychosomatics and Recall Healing, the small intestine serves exactly the same function on the level of our emotions and experiences. It is your inner center of integration and discernment.
When chronic small intestine issues arise, your body is asking you one fundamental question.
What was so painful for me that I still cannot accept it or let it go today?
Two Intestines, Two Biological Lessons: Absorbing Goodness vs Letting Go of Waste
In Recall Healing and Total Biology, the digestive system provides an exact map of our relationship with reality:
Assimilates vital nutrients, vitamins, and life-giving energy. Emotionally, it represents our capacity to draw joy, love, gratitude, and fulfillment from daily life.
Responsible for final elimination – releasing what has been processed, useless, or toxic. Metaphorically: discards the "filth, junk, and hurtful garbage" from our past.
When the small intestine suffers, the core conflict is often the inability to digest what is good in life. A person shuts down from the positive aspects of reality, unconsciously denying the goodness around them. Hidden beliefs begin to govern the inner dialogue:
“I cannot see the bright side of life – in every situation, I instinctively spot what is wrong, defective, or threatening.”
“This is not how I envisioned it, so nothing feels rewarding or worthwhile anymore.”
“Everything must be flawless. If it isn't perfect, it feels completely unacceptable.”
“I struggle to embrace good things because I am always bracing for the other shoe to drop.”
This is a state where the physical body refuses to absorb nutrients, mirroring our emotional inability to receive and integrate the good things life has to offer.
When Metal Insults Fire
In the Five Elements theory (known from Traditional Chinese Medicine and utilized in various bioenergetic approaches), there is a phenomenon where Metal insults Fire. What does this mean in practice for our emotional life?
Metal symbolizes protection, armor, rigid rules, control, and defense mechanisms. It is the shield we hide behind when the world turns out to be too threatening. On the other hand, Fire (which is energetically connected to the heart and the small intestine) represents the joy of life, warmth, closeness, genuine openness to another human being, and the pleasure of experiencing.
If, as a result of painful experiences, we decide to build an increasingly thick "armor" around ourselves (made of coldness, distance, or excessive control), we effectively protect ourselves from further injury. Unfortunately, at the same time, we cut ourselves off from the flow of vital energy. Armor keeps out not only arrows but also sunlight. We deprive ourselves of joy, lightness, and the ability to form deep relationships. The Fire slowly dies out.
What Are You Unable to "Digest"?
Problems with the small intestine are rarely caused by trivial daily stressors. Most often, they are deep-seated wounds that, for some reason, we cannot integrate and flush out of our system. These include:
- A sense of betrayal and deceit – situations where our value system was brutally trampled upon by someone close to us.
- The experience of rejection or cruelty – moments when we were stripped of our basic sense of security and dignity.
- A difficult breakup – one that our psyche has not yet finalized, constantly replaying the past.
- The memory of boundary violations – situations where we could not defend ourselves, breeding deep regret and frustration.
- The need to constantly control everything – a compulsive mechanism aimed at making sure we will never again be hurt.
From the perspective of Recall Healing, in the case of inflammatory diseases, such as Crohn's disease, we often deal with a conflict of inability to protect oneself from something perceived as extremely painful or "unacceptable".
These are situations that have literally gotten stuck in our throat like a fishbone. Through chronic inflammation, the brain communicates: “This situation is still burning in my system. I am trying to destroy this toxic morsel, but I can't.”
What About SIBO and Gut Flora? Looking Beyond Diet Alone
In conventional medicine and clinical nutrition, one of today's most frequently diagnosed conditions is SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth). When individuals experience chronic intestinal pain, a severely bloated belly, abdominal cramps, gas, or recurrent diarrhea and constipation, clinicians diagnose a profound dysbiosis on a biochemical level – inflamed, swollen intestines and erratic microbial overgrowth. The blame is almost always placed solely on poor nutrition, antibiotic use, or dietary indiscretions.
From the perspective of Recall Healing, symptoms described as SIBO are viewed not as an isolated enemy, but as a biological reaction and a meaningful signal from the digestive system.
We do not look at SIBO as an isolated "enemy disease", but rather examine what the biological organism is trying to express. Bacterial flora is our biological ally – our small intestine depends on healthy flora to break down and process food. Where does such a sudden, severe dysbiosis and erratic overgrowth stem from? Microorganisms do not alter their balance without a biological reason.
From a psychosomatic perspective, any persistent gut dysbiosis has a profound emotional root. It is driven by the very same conflicts that govern the small intestine:
Inability to Assimilate and Accept
The struggle to digest and integrate current or past life events ("I cannot absorb this or live with this reality").
Impaired Discernment and Boundary Issues
Losing clarity on what is truly nourishing versus toxic, allowing harmful relationships or situations into one's personal space.
Indecisiveness and Internal Paralysis
Constant second-guessing, uncertainty about one's path, difficulty distinguishing right from wrong in difficult circumstances, and fear of losing control.
Addressing SIBO and chronic dysbiosis through Recall Healing goes beyond restrictive diets and endless supplements. Lasting relief occurs when we identify and resolve the underlying emotional conflict that disrupted internal equilibrium and triggered this protective biological response.
Time to Take Off the Armor
As long as you invest all your vital energy in maintaining your defense mechanisms, your small intestine has to work in overdrive, reflecting your inner resistance to accepting what has happened.
Stop for a moment today and ask yourself these four freeing questions:
What in my life was so difficult that it was deemed completely unacceptable?
Who or what past situation am I still stubbornly unable to let go of?
Has the excessive need for control become my only mechanism for survival?
Is my inner armor robbing me of joy, intimacy, and the lightness of life today?
If you feel that your body is trying to show you old, unresolved grief through intestinal symptoms, I invite you to an online session.
