Imagine a box full of perfectly uniform, gray, boring matchsticks. They lie in a neat row, smell of sulfur, and complain about the weather. Suddenly, one matchstick says: "You know what? From today, I'm pink, I smell like strawberries, and I sparkle!". What does the rest of the box do? They get furious, of course!
Recently, I came across a brilliantly simple quote: "Differentness annoys sameness". When I read it, I immediately thought: Bingo! That explains so many of our frustrations.
Why Does Your Personal Growth Annoy Some People?
We've all been there. You decide to change something. You start setting boundaries, refuse overtime at work, go on a diet, sign up for a dancing class, or simply – horror of horrors! – you are happy for no apparent reason.
And suddenly, the snarky comments start crawling out of the woodwork:
* "Oh, I see success has gone to your head!"
* "Let's see how long you last on this new diet..."
* "You used to be cooler, more one of us..." (read: you used to complain with us about everything).
From a psychological and biological perspective, the mechanism here is trivially simple (and quite funny when you look at it from the outside).
The human brain loves the familiar. Familiar means safe.
When you start to change, you shatter that sense of security in your group.
When you step out of line, you become a walking pang of conscience for those who haven't mustered the courage to do the same. They aren't mad at you.
They are mad at their own comfortable, worn-out couch that they don't want to get off!
The Mirror Principle with a Smile
In Recall Healing, we often talk about the mirror principle. What annoys us most in others is a part of ourselves. So, if your new pink dress and wide smile "annoy" someone terribly, in 99% of cases, that person is looking at you and subconsciously thinking:
"Why can't I allow myself to do that?!"
So the next time you hear a biting comment about your "new self", instead of explaining yourself or apologizing for living your way, try to smile inwardly. That comment is actually... a standing ovation for your personal growth!
Be the Pink Matchstick!
Let's not be afraid to "annoy" sameness.
Mediocrity naturally likes to pull everything down because the bottom is crowded, warm, and you don't have to stick your neck out.
But you are not here to be anyone's comfort blanket.
If your differentness and your own rules cause someone's system to "glitch", it means you're doing it right! Shine your light. Be that pink matchstick smelling of strawberries.
And if someone has a problem with it? Well, they can always go back to their gray box. 😎
