"Many false steps have been taken by standing still."
— Timothy Ferriss
We often think that we only make mistakes when we act. That a "wrong step" requires movement, a decision, stepping out of line. But what if lack of movement is also a movement, just deeper into fear and stagnation?
The Illusion of Safety
Standing still is rarely neutral. In nature, water that doesn't flow becomes stagnant. In our lives, when we "stand still" for fear of making a mistake, we often regress mentally. Our automatic brain, wanting to protect us from the unknown, keeps us in the known zone – even if it is painful for us.
In Recall Healing, paralysis, the inability to make a move, is often linked to a conflict: "I don't know which way to go, so I go nowhere" or "Every move will bring pain".
"Wrong Steps" in Our Head
This quote beautifully shows that what happens in our heads during stagnation are also "steps".
* A step towards self-doubt.
* A step towards "what if" scenarios.
* A step into reinforcing the belief that we are not enough.
When you stand still, your thoughts often run a marathon. And it is these mental steps – full of fear and self-criticism – that can be more destructive than any failed attempt at action in the real world.
Passivity also has a price
We often fall for the illusion that if we don't make a decision, we risk nothing. This is a trap. Not making a decision is also a decision – a decision to stay in the same spot.
- Fleeing time: Standing still, you use up energy anyway. This time will pass regardless, and certain chances will simply become impossible. Even if your move doesn't end in success, it will still give you a new perspective.
- The body remembers: Long-term stagnation and a feeling of being "stuck" is a stress signal for biology. Procrastinating on changing a job that destroys you, or staying in a relationship that no longer serves us, are real burdens on our organism. (You can read more about how emotions affect communication and the body in my other post).
- The decision is yours: There is no such thing as the "perfect moment." It is just an ego excuse, stemming from fear of failure. We make the decision – whether we do something or not. Whether we take action or remain passive. It is our decision and our responsibility.
Remember: The worst scenario is not failure, but stagnation. A lack of experiences is a lack of life. We are here to develop, try, and taste life, not just to safely survive.
How to Move Forward?
- Accept that there are no perfect decisions. Every move carries risk, but also learning.
- Ask yourself: "What am I really afraid of if I take this step?" Often we are afraid not of failure itself, but of others' judgment or losing our current (even if uncomfortable) safety.
- Take a micro-step. You don't have to run right away. Sometimes it's enough just to stand up.
Remember: Life is movement. Even if you take a step in the "wrong" direction, you gain a new perspective that you didn't have while standing still.
Do you feel stuck? Paralyzed by the fear of making a decision? I invite you to a consultation. We will check what biological program is holding you in place and how to safely move forward.
