Many of us live with the belief that we have no control over our own thoughts and emotions. When fear, sadness, or regret appear, we consider it an inevitable reaction to the surrounding reality or recurring memories. We surrender to these states, believing that this is simply our fate and there is no escape from it.
But is it really?
Key takeaway: According to a beautiful, liberating metaphor, imagine that your mind is a modern TV with an infinite number of channels. What crosses the screen of your consciousness are merely propositions.
No one forces you to feel pain because of difficult memories, just as no one tells you to plunge into fear-inducing visions of the future. These are merely possibilities.
The mind is a TV. You hold the remote control
The mind constantly offers a choice of different programs. It can be a channel with a drama from the past, a thriller full of fears about tomorrow, or a tempting soap opera of self-pity. The mysterious charm of these "negative" programs makes us often yield to the temptation to watch them. We get angry, worry, fall into a vortex of negative vibrations, forgetting one key truth: we don't have to follow these thoughts.
The prevailing view in our society is that we have no alternative to our current state of mind, attitude, or current emotions. We consider it normal and natural that the "external situation" completely determines us. Few of us allow ourselves the thought that we have any choice in all of this.
The illusion of the mind's dominance
Through inner focus and a deeper look at yourself, you can discover something absolutely liberating: all states of your consciousness arise as a result of a choice. They are not unchangeable certainties determined by factors that supposedly cannot be controlled.
In fact, the mind does not rule us at all. It is merely a powerful tool, a screen on which an infinite series of options is displayed in the disguise of memories, fantasies, fears, or ideas. This means you are more than your thoughts.
How to regain control?
To free yourself from this illusory dominance of the mind, you need to realize one key fact: its whole parade, what you see in your head, is just a suggestion.
When you feel that you are being pulled into a vortex of fear or self-pity, take these 3 simple steps:
Notice and pause: Catch yourself automatically watching a "negative program".
Ask the question: Do I really want to watch this right now and invest my energy in it?
Change the channel: Consciously shift your attention to your breath, body, or another action.
Understanding that you hold the remote control in your hand is the first step to true freedom. You can mute the sound. And above all – you can decide where you invest your precious energy.
Practical exercise: The 90-second rule
The moment you feel a rush of thoughts, pause. Take a deep breath and realize: an emotion in the body lasts biologically for about 90 seconds, if you don't feed it with a "story" from your head. Consciously ask yourself: Do I want to watch this program for the next 90 seconds? If not, consciously direct your attention to the here and now. Change the channel.
The choice is yours. You don't have to be a passive viewer – become a conscious observer and creator of your own reality.
